When one opens a store in a city one has no history with, it’s quite necessary to look for signs that a friendly ghost could send.
This happened to me in the city of Lille, which is located 120 miles North of Paris, and easily reachable in a one hour high speed train ride. There was a cathedral near the location suggested to me; the place was all right, but I needed something to hang on to. The cathedral next to it had something weird and ungraceful from the outside, which intrigued me, so I went inside. Then I discoverd that the very boring usual stained-glass windows had been removed and replaced by beautiful white marble slabs, and that looks absolutly fantastic from the inside of the building. So, as one says, «you can’t judge a book by its cover». This job was done by architect Pierre-Louis Carlier in 1999. Steel structure which supports this art is by Peter Rice.

« When thinking of understated, minimal men’s and women’s clothing with that hard-to-define effortless something, the name Atelier de Production et de Création, or A.P.C., is one that immediately springs to mind. Jean Touitou started the label in 1987 as a reaction to what he saw as the loud, money-focused, gaudy mood of the ’80s. An idealist and revolutionary who had fallen somehow unexpectedly into fashion in the late ’70s, Touitou, born in Tunisia and raised in Paris, was looking for a movement and couldn’t find one, so he decided to create an alternative to what he saw around him (…) »

Oh well..well… the sheer nonsense caused by the misuse of words will fill me with dismay for ever. It is a godsend, in a way, to be disturbed in such a way in our decivilised world, as it is a reminder that we’re really up shit creek. By the way, this could be an ideal subject for a literary university entrance exam : « Before a new concept appears, must old ones necessarily disappear? » Jean T.

Washing your clothes yourself is a good thing to me, and this is specially true of jumpers, wool requires a lot of water, and taking your woollen, cotton, or cashmere jumpers to the dry cleaners is altogether a depressing, costly, and not so efficient affair.
MIND YOUR OWN LAUNDRY BUSINESS !

I went to Detroit thinking of Stooges and Death and even Jack White, of crumbling mansions and Motown.
There I found a city that had rotted long ago — picked clean down to the last light switch — yet still beautiful. People are planting gardens in empty lots where 10 houses once stood. They are making music in empty ballrooms. Both out of necessity.
Back in New York, I tried to describe what I’d witnessed to my boss.
« So, you’ve seen the future, » she said.
